How long does the hiring process generally take?

Approximately 4-6 weeks, depending on your rank on the eligibility list and factors in your background.
As an out of state applicant, how many trips will I need to make to Flower Mound during the hiring process?

Generally three. One for the initial testing, the second for the personal interview, and the third for the polygraph, psychological, and medical / drug screen.
Can I be considered if I have used marijuana or other drugs / narcotics in the past?

This will depend on the time of the last usage and frequency of usage. Minimum requirements state no drug use within the past five years and no excessive marijuana use.
What will happen if I intentionally omit important information or found to be deceptive in the hiring process regarding my background history?

Honesty and integrity are important facets of police work. If you are found intentionally omitting important information or being deceptive, you will be permanently disqualified from the hiring process.
I have been disqualified or was previously disqualified from the hiring process. How long before I can re-apply?

That depends on why you were disqualified. If you fail the written test, physical fitness test, or BPAD test, you may reapply after six months. You may reapply after one year if you fail the psychological examination. Any other disqualification will result in a minimum disqualification of one year or possible permanent disqualification.
Do I have to live in Flower Mound to be a Flower Mound Police Officer?

No. However, if you are in an on-call capacity you must be able to respond within one hour.
Does the Flower Mound Police Department have a policy on tattoos?

Yes, officers cannot have any visible tattoos while on duty.
How many sworn officers does the Flower Mound Police Department have?

At this time, we are authorized 85 police officers.
How long is the police academy?

We currently use two regional police academies. The North Central Texas Council of Governments Academy in Arlington is 22 weeks long. The Tarrant County College Academy in Fort Worth is 17 weeks long.
I was discharged from the military with a General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions or an Uncharacterized Discharge. Is this acceptable to apply for the Flower Mound Police Department?
- Applicants will not be considered if they were discharged under less than honorable conditions. All other discharges (such as UNCHARACTERIZED) will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
Does the Flower Mound Police Department offer a study guide for the written examination?

No. The study guide will be available for you to review immediately before the examination.
Are there any age or physical limitations on who can apply to be a police officer?

A peace officer must be at least 21 years old to be licensed in Texas. There is no maximum age limit to apply for the Flower Mound Police Department. As long are you are fit enough to pass the physical fitness test, medical examination, and complete the police academy (if necessary), there are no physical limitations on who can apply.
Do I have to attend a police academy?

Yes. Unless you are already TCLEOSE certified, you will be required to attend and complete the police academy of our choosing.
Is there any way to skip patrol and go directly into a specialized unit?

No. All new officers must have at least two years as a patrol officer exclusive of field training before transfers or promotions.
What types of questions are on the police written examination?

The written examination measures the ability to learn and apply police information, the ability to observe and remember details, the ability to use judgment and logic, and verbal and reading comprehension. The test consists of 100 multiple choice questions.
Does the Flower Mound Police Department offer lateral transfers for police officers?

No. However, experienced TCLEOSE certified officers may be hired at pay step 2 at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
May I submit a resume?

Yes. However, completion of the Town of Flower Mound Application and Personal History Statement are still required.

When is the next police academy?

The Flower Mound Police Department uses two different police academies to train their new recruits. Once hired, you will be sent to the next available academy.
Are there any fees or costs that I would need to pay for attending the academy?

No. Once hired, the Flower Mound Police Department will pay you a salary, provide full benefits to you and your family, and pay for the cost of the academy.
Does the Flower Mound Police Department furnish all of my uniforms and equipment?

The Flower Mound Police Department will furnish you all the required uniforms and equipment. You will be responsible for providing your footwear and firearm.
Does the Flower Mound Police Department require that my college hours be in Criminal Justice?

No. We accept any classes from an accredited college.
What is done on the testing day?

The written examination will be given in the morning. Those who pass will be invited to return in the afternoon for the physical fitness test. Out of town applicants will also take their BPAD examination on this day as well.
What is the attire for the various steps of the hiring process?

Please wear business attire for all stages of the hiring process except for the physical fitness test. Please bring a set of work out clothes to change into for the physical agility test.

What shifts do patrol officers work?

Our patrol officers work 12 hour shifts. We have two day shifts and two night shifts. They are from 6:00 a.m. – 6 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.; 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.

What is the police academy like?

The academy hours are generally 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. The training curriculum is an adult education program, with practical and physical fitness training.

I am a police officer in another state. What is the process of being licensed in Texas?

Go to www.tcleose.state.tx.us and review the Out of State Application Process under the Forms and Applications link. Out of state officers must complete the mandated training and may challenge the state test for certification.
